might only need 2 coats of paint if it's not a large color change but if it's a large color change such as going from green to yellow you will need multiple coats for good coverage. There are certain colors that will not cover well under any condition because the paint inherently is very weak to cover up and hide the previous underlying coat of paint. These colors are yellow and red and some instances of orange are the biggest culprits that we need multiple coats of paint to cover.

make sure that you filled in all the holes and cracks in the drywall with a good quality sandable drywall compound filler. After the drywall repair/patch is dry, sand the repair flat and smooth to the rest of the wall. It is important that there are no lumps or homes or dips in the wall otherwise it will take away from the look you are trying to achieve by repainting your room.
