Sometimes gypsum board repair is not even necessary if you just have some kind of a stain coming through but it has not degraded the gypsum board our drywall contractors will be able to identify if you need drywall repair.
When doing these repairs with quick dry plaster compound I recommend that you put enough on that you have the area completely covered. You don't want to miss a part in afterward have to redo. Generally, 2 coats should get most jobs done. The initial coat will fix the hole and cover most of it in the second application will get enough on to make it smooth and level to the rest of the wall and possibly a circle which will be a very thin scratch coat to eliminate any irregularities in the plastering.
The last coat you can do even with premix compound. It will dry fast enough because it's thin. I don't recommend using mud (premixed compound) for filling the holes. Premixed drywall compound dries slowly when applied thicker than 3/16 or more.
