Painting Kitchen Cabinets: Pictures, Options, Tips & Ideas

So are you thinking about painting kitchen cabinets?

Well, it can be done all you do is pick your colors and start painting.
But it is not quite that simple painting kitchen cabinets, you do have to know what you are doing to make them look good. There is a procedure that has to be followed to make sure that the paint job will look good and also remain durable. What we mean by durable is the paint after it has dried usually it takes one month for latex paint to completely drive through and cure. But if you did not take the necessary steps and precautions in the preparation work prior to painting kitchen cabinets you will encounter paint failure. All cabinet surfaces and edges must be totally clean of grease. If there is a layer of grease and you paint over top of it there is nothing bonding the painting to the wood.
So let me explain to the procedure are preparing your work for painting kitchen cabinets. There are a few hints and tips I can tell you about cleaning your kitchen cupboards.
All your kitchen cupboards and immediately close to the stove will most likely have the most amount of grease buildup. The grease comes from when the homeowner is cooking almost everything with either water that creates a vapour which has most probably greases or oils in it such as soup. And when this vapour cools down and settles on the kitchen cupboard doors it creates a thin layer of grease and as the years go on it builds up thicker and thicker. Having a kitchen exhaust fan would definitely help out the situation. Another culprit for creating greases on kitchen cabinets is frying things like fish and French fries which definitely leaves a heavy layer of grease even more so than cooking.
Another source of grease is when the cook or anyone who has dirty and greasy hands it touches the doors instead of just the doorknobs. You should pay special attention to where the handles or doorknobs are on the kitchen cupboards doors. These are dirty many times as we have noted. Special attention must be taken to this area throughout the whole process. This is where most of the contact will be. If the paint is not securely sticking to the door here that it will come off easily because of the constant touching scraping and so on.

If you want to decrease your kitchen cupboard doors there is a number of products available. You can buy a special degreaser from the box of stores such as Home Depot or Lowe's. It is specifically formulated to cut grease and dissolve it. We usually use three cloths to do the cleaning. The first cloth usually gets replaced after this dirty with a new one. The second cloth can be rinsed constantly and the third cloth should be replaced after it is to moist to pick up any more water. To start with you spray the degreasing solution over the door evenly and with a clean cloth wipe or rub the door until it looks clean. You might have to turn the rag around a couple of times just to make sure that you have removed all the greases. When you feel that they are clean enough then the next step is to wash them down with clean wet clothes again a couple of times to ensure that there is no greasy residue. The last step is to wipe the moisture off the doors and cabinets until they are dry.

Now that you have cleaned kitchen cupboards thoroughly they are now ready for sanding. Mississauga handyman painting recommends using a 180 grit sandpaper that does not scratch large scratches into the wood. We usually would recommend a 150 grit sandpaper or sanding pad. Since your cupboards are clean your sandpaper should only load up with varnishes or urethane which will be much easier than to try to stand off grease that is still remaining. So make sure that you did a good job cleaning the cabinets. While doing your sanding work if you notice any imperfections in the wood now is the time to fill either the holes that might've been placed hanging utensils off the back of the cupboard door or maybe even scratches that happened over the course of time. Make sure that your wood filler is properly filling the hole or crack. Again, said lightly to create a smooth transition.

If you are planning on doing kitchen painting that we suggest that you do in your kitchen painting first so that your wall colors will match your color scheme for your kitchen colors. Painting your cabinet with complementary colors are most commonly considered. But mind you can do whatever you like you can even paint black cabinets or paint with vibrant colours, the choice is yours.
