Wainscot is a way to add decoration to your walls also give your walls more protection from damage and cold.
For example if you have a hallway that is quite plain and uninteresting looking you might want to dress it up with some wood wainscot paneling.
You can examine your wall and see where you might want to divide the wall up. You could do something as simple as installing a chair rail to start with. Next you can decide what type and shape of squares you want to place onto the wall.
You can place the trim molding directly onto the wall or you can build a plaque with trim molding on it and place that directly onto the wall. Keep in mind you will have to distance all your panels to make it look equal distance from each other.
Simple chair rail you might start here before you do your wainscoting installation.
Layout your panel squares evenly within the boundaries of your lower wall. Calculate your spacing between squares so the paneling all looks even and spaced properly to each other. And with a miter saw start cutting your molding. The molding can be installed with either small finish nails or glue but nails are preferred because they won't move around. We use nails and glue.
If you want to do a more elaborate wainscot installation you might choose to install wood laminate sheeting such as oak or maple onto the wall and then decorate with moldings. There is more work involved with this process because you need more tools and money to buy the wood. Plywood veneered sheets are expensive but look good just like solid wood.
You can get these veneer sheets in different types of wood such as oak or cherry wood, maple, Birchwood at your major box stores such as Home Depot or home hardware. You can even get them to cut the panels to size right there.
All you will need is a miter saw to cut the angles for the trim molding and some finish nails to attach the molding to the wood paneling. You can use construction adhesive to attach the wood paneling to the drywall. I usually use PL 200 construction adhesive.Next step wood molding inserted to create wainscoting insulation effect
When planning a wainscoting installation, you have to create a design that will work for the room before you begin to cut material.
