Popcorn Ceiling Removal for a smooth ceiling
There is a difference between either popcorn ceilings or stucco ceilings sometimes people refer to the same thing mentioning either one. The popcorn ceiling is the cheaper one of the two. Popcorn is sprayed onto the ceiling with the machine leaving a flat surface with jagged particles sprayed on as a texture on the ceiling hiding imperfections on the drywall. Like little embedded particles on the ceiling.
Stucco Ceiling
Stucco a porous plaster like material which is applied by trowel and it is the same idea hiding imperfections in the ceiling except there’s more work involved with stucco it can also be laid out very smoothly and faux finished creating different kinds of designs and patterns
Asbestos Poisoning
In the year 2020 there is a larger market of people who are deciding to remove that old popcorn ceiling. One good reason to remove the popcorn ceiling is it might contain asbestos which no one wants to breathe. Stucco had asbestos in it up until the late 70s.
Maintenance Issues With Stucco(Popcorn) Ceilings
Popcorn ceilings are hard to repair if damaged. If you have a water damage or a scratch in the stucco is hard to repair. Let's talk about water damaged ceilings. You have a brown spot where the water had damaged your stucco/popcornceiling and you have to get rid of it. So how do you do this. First if the water damage in your popcorn is not severe it is just simply discolored the popcorn you only have to processes to do.
Painting Popcorn Ceilings
Spot prime the affected area totally with a stain-blocking primer. Let the primer dry completely and then you can paint the entire popcorn ceiling. (Quick note – this will have to be done with most probably oil-based paint because latex paints will dissolve popcorn if it has never been painted previously.) This is a problem for most people no one likes to paint with oil paints especially when you can't even get oil paint easily these days. Oil paint has to be applied in a well-ventilated area, it smells heavy. Oil paint also can only be washed away with solvents.
Ceiling Repair On Popcorn Ceilings
If you have ceiling damage that needs to be repaired more than just painting for example the ceiling has sagged or drooped and the drywall is no longer good you will most probably have to remove and replace that section of drywall. This part usually falls under regular drywall. Drywall repair can be done by removing a section of drywall and replacing it with a fresh piece of drywall. Depending on the size of the affected area you must make sure that the drywall is firmly attached to something that will support the drywall. These could be floor joists or some type of framework suspending the ceiling.
Next the fresh piece of drywall has to be fitted and taped with either paper tape or fibre tape and plastered. Once the plaster has dried and it is smooth and even with the rest of the ceiling then it is ready for priming (white primer) to make sure the background is white when you spray it with popcorn.
Popcorn is great for movies — not so much anymore for ceiling finishes. Popcorn ceilings and their siblings, also known as textured ceilings, were a must-have fad that started in the 1960s and ran through to the ’80s. Nick Splavsky, of Strataline Inc., removes a popcorn ceiling with a vacuum-fitted sander. (MAXIM SOLOGUB/STRATALINE INC.)They were created by spraying a special mix of plaster onto the ceiling or, in the case of texture, hand-plastered and dimpled for effect with a sponge or some other tool.
